Young entrepreneur and university student Vanessa Picker has many innovative social and not for profit projects to her name. She recently led her team to victory in the 2012 Social Venture Challenge held at the World Model United Nations Conference, with a project called Play Forward. The project harnesses sport to build confidence and self esteem in young people while also encouraging the donation of pre-loved sporting gear to support local communities. She is working on a social enterprise called Renew Review to help people locate ethical and socially responsible businesses. Another of Vanessa’s ideas – a website to make gyms more accessible and affordable (FitUsIn) – was commended at a national business competition. In 2012, Vanessa was invited to facilitate two International Youth Leadership Conferences in Prague. She was also one of 50 students selected to attend a Global Leadership Academy in Pittsburgh and then spoke in front of 1,300 young leaders from 183 countries at the One Young World Summit. Vanessa excels in cricket at a state level and is training with the South Australian Women’s team with the aim of winning a place on the National Cricket League team.
