Australian of the Year

Dr Karen Demmery, a proud Wiradjuri woman, channels her culture, resilience and lived experience into transformative leadership. After leaving school in Year 9 and facing addiction, instability and encounters with the justice system, Karen rebuilt her life from the ground up. She went on to complete two diplomas, postgraduate qualifications in trauma and recovery, a Masters of Indigenous Health and a PhD.  

Over more than two decades, Karen has become a respected specialist in trauma, healing, coaching, facilitation and cultural practice. She founded Burbirra, a consulting and counselling business, and Spirit Hive, a not‑for‑profit supporting people at risk of suicide, self harm and mental illness.  

Karen helps women reclaim identity, heal deeply and achieve economic independence. The ripples of her impact leave every community and every woman she works with stronger than she found them.
