Australia's Local Hero
The Local Hero Award was introduced into the Australian of the Year Awards in 2003. It acknowledges extraordinary contributions made by Australians in their local community.
The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans, sees the award as an opportunity to celebrate the work of ordinary Australians.
"The Local Hero Award is a chance for all Australians to recognise the efforts made by a few to better the lives of many more around them.
"I encourage all Australians to take the opportunity to thank these many dedicated individuals by nominating them for the Local Hero Award," he said.
