Australian of the Year

Since 1960 our nation has celebrated the achievement and contribution of eminent citizens through the Australian of the Year Awards. The awards profile leading Australians who are role models for us all. The Australian of the Year Award is proudly sponsored by the Commonwealth Bank.

Senior Australian of the Year (60 years and over)

The Senior Australian of the Year Award recognises those Australians aged 60 and over who continue to achieve and contribute. The award commenced in the International Year of Older Persons in 1999.

The Local Hero Award is sponsored by the Department of Health and Ageing. The Minister for Ageing, the Honourable Justine Elliot MP, believes this award provides a great opportunity for the Australian community to recognise the ongoing contributions made by older Australians

"The Senior Australian of the Year Award recognises those Australians who continue to contribute to the community even in their more senior years. They continue to work hard and long hours in their chosen fields and never cease to find more time and new ways to keep on giving."

Young Australian of the Year (16 to 30 years)

The Young Australian of the Year Award recognises those aged 16 to 30 who are outstanding and exceptional young Australians. The Young Australian of the Year has been awarded since 1979.

The Young Australian of the Year Award is sponsored by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. The Minister for Youth, the Honourable Kate Ellis MP, highlights the importance of the award.

"The Young Australian of the Year Award is a great opportunity to recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of young Australians who have made a substantial contribution to their communities."

Australia's Local Hero

The Local Hero Award was introduced into the Australian of the Year Awards in 2003. It acknowledges extraordinary contributions made by Australians in their local community.

The Local Hero Award is sponsored by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. The Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans, sees the award as an opportunity to celebrate the work of ordinary Australians.

"The Local Hero Award provides an important way of acknowledging Australians who are making a real difference to the lives of those around them.

"That's what being an Australian citizen is all about - giving something back to the community we share."
